Reading some e-mails and came across this. Rocky had mentioned this and it is good to see him getting some publicity. He is pretty well known in Mississippi. Probably could play festivals down there all summer. He also manages a stop at Ground Zero, Morgan Freeman's place in Clarksdale, MS.
Rocky will play solo and then come back to join Honeyboy Edwards.
Looks like a pretty good line-up.
The 10th Annual Highway 61 Blues Festival in Leland, MS is Saturday, June 6 and 7th, 2009. Performing at the fest will be Eddie Shaw and the Wolf Gang, Cedric and Lightnin' Malcolm, David "Honeyboy" Edwards with Michael Frank, Rocky Lawrence, Lil' Dave Thompson, T Model Ford, The John Horton Band, Mississippi Slim, Eddie Cusic, Pat Thomas, Jimmy "Duck" Holmes, Mickey Rogers and the Soulmasters, Mike's Blue Groove (Sweden), The Mayhem String Band, Rob Mortimer Band, Pokey Lafarge and Lazy Bone.

My First Blues Blizzard

I was just thinking about the first time I went to a Connecticut Blues Society Blues Blizzard.
I had just returned from my exile in Washington, DC and a friend suggested heading to Hartford for this Blues Blizzard, 10 bands.

It was at the Municipal Cafeteria on Main St. Bands alternated from the first floor to the lower level. Five bands on each level. I remember seeing Johnny Vibrato for the first time.

Since then it has been a number of years of great blues in Connecticut with some great local bands.

They stopped for a while and then we came back with the ten band format at 55 Pratt St.

Now it has become one of the state's best party at the VFW.

Musicians at BMAs

The Blues Foundation has released the first list of musicians that are coming to play at the 30th Blues Music Awards.
Leading the list is BB King who will prsent the "Entertainer of the Year" award, named in his honor.

The BMA is like no other award ceremony. Fans are seated among and with the nominees. Often an award winner walks by to pick up the BMA.

During and after the award part of the evening, nominees can come up and perform. Sometimes this results in interesting combinations as not everyone has a band. Once all the awards have been given out, the blues goes on until everyone has had a chance to play. It lasts way past midnight into the next morning.

During the day the fans and musicians can often be seen in the hotel lobby, sometimes playing and other timeschatting and taking photos.

Blues Music Awards

The Blues Foundation is getting ready for its 30th Awards show, May 7. Memphis will be a night of great blues as more artists will be playing in one place than any festival anywhere.
Each nominee in attendance get 20 minutes and they take advantage of it.

In some cases, great combinations are put together, a once in a lifetime show.

Held at the Convention Center adjacent to the Memphis Marriott, it is just a walk between the music and lodging. Often the nominees are gathered in the hotel lobby hanging out with fans and friends.

Mojomatics turn 30

As the Mojomatics were getting ready to play at the Blues Blizzard, Manny told MC Tom Retano that this was the band's 30th year together.
Wishing them many more.

The Blizzard

The Blues Blizzard was as expected--a great party. Doors opened at 6 pm and people were there early.
Once the music started, the dancing started. Even a blown light fuse didn't stop the bands or the dancers. It is a time for friends to play and a chance to hear 5 bands in one place.
Other news picked up at the Blizz, Chris Tofield will be back for some gigs. His guitar is missed in Connecticut but he is keeping busy in Vegas.
Berlin Blues Festival is now Berlin Music Festival with some country and a Jimmy Buffett act. More on te Festival to come.
It was a good night at the VFW.
